Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a top cause of vision loss in people over 50. However, not many adults are aware of this eye condition or the impact it can have on their quality of life.

February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month — a time for Chicago area eye care professionals to raise awareness about AMD, educate the community, and support those affected.

At Kirk Eye Center, we want to help you understand the basics of AMD, including symptoms like blind spots and vision distortion, ways to prevent macular degeneration, and why spreading awareness is so important. If straight lines look wavy or you experience sudden changes in your vision, call us right away for a vision exam. We offer appointments in River Forest, Glen Ellyn, Gurnee, and Chicago, IL.

The basics of age-related macular degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration refers to the gradual deterioration of the macula, which is the central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision.

There are two kinds of AMD: dry and wet. Dry AMD, which is more common, occurs when small protein deposits build up in the macula. Wet AMD (a less common but more severe form) happens when the blood vessels beneath the macula begin to swell and leak fluid. While age-related macular degeneration doesn't lead to blindness, it can impact your ability to read, drive, and even recognize faces.

Common symptoms of age-related macular degeneration

The earliest stages of AMD may not have noticeable symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, you may experience:

  • Vision distortion: This symptom makes straight lines look wavy or bent.
  • Blind spots: Dark areas may appear in the center of your vision. Over time, these blind spots can grow larger.
  • Difficulty perceiving colors: As AMD advances, colors may appear dull or washed out. You may also have trouble with color contrast.

If you notice these signs, book an eye exam at Kirk Eye Center in River Forest, Glen Ellyn, Gurnee, or Chicago, IL. Our team can assess your vision and recommend treatment options for AMD.

Why Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month matters

Raising awareness about AMD is important for several reasons:

  • Early detection can save vision: Many people don't know they have AMD until the disease has already advanced. Catching it early allows for better treatment options.
  • Encourages healthy habits: While there's no cure for AMD, taking certain steps can reduce risk. Awareness can motivate people to make healthier lifestyle choices.
  • Empowers patients: An AMD diagnosis can feel overwhelming. An awareness month allows patients to connect with others for guidance and encouragement.

How to prevent macular degeneration

While there is no way to prevent AMD, there are simple ways to lower your risk:

  • Book regular eye exams: Routine eye exams can detect age-related macular degeneration before it leads to vision loss.
  • Quit smoking: Smoking is linked to an increased risk of AMD. Our team encourages patients who smoke to quit as soon as possible.
  • Maintain a healthy diet: Eating a well-balanced diet rich in leafy greens and fruits may help lower the risk of developing AMD.
  • Manage overall health: High blood pressure and cholesterol are also linked to AMD. Keeping these conditions under control can help prevent vision issues.

Great overall experience with my Lasik procedure for both my eyes. Dr. Kirk & the staff were fantastic throughout the entire process. I'm so pumped that I don't have to wear contacts or glasses ever again!

This is the second time I’ve been to Kirk Eye Center on Harlem. I could not be more pleased. I’ve never had to wait more than a minute or 2 after I arrive. Everyone is friendly and helpful. I’ve seen the technician Rose and Dr Kirk Jr both times and enjoyed being assisted by both. There is even plenty of parking. Glad to have them caring for my diabetic and other needs

This is absolutely no exaggeration. Dr Tyler Kirk saved my right eye. He is the reason I have vision in that eye. I will be a Kirk Eye Center customer for life!

Gurnee Kirk is my "go to home office". Recently had the Femto/Lasik cataract surgery at the surgical center in River Forest. I cannot begin to tell you how professional and yet personal everyone was I came in contact with. From the doctors and technicians, to staff and even the terrific van driver. Everything went so smoothly and I was informed every inch of the way in a very successful procedure. Even the followups being turned over to my long time Optometrist just down the street from me. Five stars is not enough... twenty or more is necessary. Choose Kirk Eye Center, you'll always be grateful you did. Darrell May, Antioch IL.
