When Should Someone Not Get LASIK?

When considering LASIK eye surgery, it is essential to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. Kirk Eye Center, serving River Forest, Glen Ellyn, Gurnee, and Chicago, IL, specializes in offering personalized LASIK services. They consider factors such as age, eye health, refractive errors, and lifestyle before recommending LASIK. Generally, candidates should be at least 18 years old, have stable vision for at least a year, and may need to be free from certain eye conditions.

Can LASIK fix astigmatism, and when is it not advisable?

Astigmatism is a common eye condition that LASIK eye surgery can often correct. It involves an irregularly shaped cornea that leads to blurred vision. However, the severity and type of astigmatism can determine if LASIK is the best solution. Kirk Eye Center's specialists, some of the leading providers of LASIK in the Chicago area, will conduct comprehensive tests to ascertain the feasibility of LASIK for your astigmatism. It's important to note that if you have a high degree of astigmatism or your cornea is unusually thin, you might not be an ideal candidate for the procedure.

What other eye conditions may make someone a poor candidate for LASIK?

Several eye conditions may make LASIK a less suitable option. Chronic dry eyes, large pupils, or certain degenerative or autoimmune diseases could disqualify you from undergoing LASIK. If you are pregnant or nursing, your hormone levels can affect your eye shape and vision, making LASIK less effective. Before opting for LASIK, the experts at Kirk Eye Center will conduct a thorough examination to evaluate any potential risks and provide you with the most effective treatment options possible.

How does my lifestyle impact my suitability for LASIK?

Apart from medical considerations, your lifestyle also plays a significant role in determining whether LASIK eye surgery is right for you. If you engage in contact sports or activities that risk eye injuries, LASIK may not be the best choice since it could potentially lead to complications. Additionally, your occupation can also impact the decision. For example, some jobs, like those in the aviation industry, may have specific vision requirements that could be affected by LASIK surgery. It's critical to discuss these factors with the eye specialists at Kirk Eye Center.

This is the second time I’ve been to Kirk Eye Center on Harlem. I could not be more pleased. I’ve never had to wait more than a minute or 2 after I arrive. Everyone is friendly and helpful. I’ve seen the technician Rose and Dr Kirk Jr both times and enjoyed being assisted by both. There is even plenty of parking. Glad to have them caring for my diabetic and other needs

This is absolutely no exaggeration. Dr Tyler Kirk saved my right eye. He is the reason I have vision in that eye. I will be a Kirk Eye Center customer for life!

Gurnee Kirk is my "go to home office". Recently had the Femto/Lasik cataract surgery at the surgical center in River Forest. I cannot begin to tell you how professional and yet personal everyone was I came in contact with. From the doctors and technicians, to staff and even the terrific van driver. Everything went so smoothly and I was informed every inch of the way in a very successful procedure. Even the followups being turned over to my long time Optometrist just down the street from me. Five stars is not enough... twenty or more is necessary. Choose Kirk Eye Center, you'll always be grateful you did. Darrell May, Antioch IL.
