The Importance of Glaucoma Awareness Month for Early Detection

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of permanent blindness — but many don't realize how serious it is until it's too late. Glaucoma Awareness Month is one of the best times to spread the word about this sight-stealing disease and encourage people of almost all ages to get their eyes checked regularly.
Glaucoma develops when normal intraocular pressure (IOP) rises and damages the optic nerve, eventually leading to vision loss. However, glaucoma symptoms may not appear until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage.
At Kirk Eye Center, we can help you stay one step ahead of glaucoma. Our comprehensive eye exams are designed to catch eye issues early and protect vision. We also offer laser treatment for glaucoma with Dr. Tyler Kirk. To get started, book an appointment in River Forest, Glen Ellyn, Gurnee, or Chicago, IL. Let's work together to keep your eyes healthy.
Understanding glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve and eventually lead to vision loss. It occurs when normal intraocular pressure increases due to fluid buildup in the eye. If the fluid buildup happens inside the trabecular meshwork, it's known as open-angle glaucoma. On the other hand, if it happens because the space between the iris and cornea is too small or blocked, it's called narrow- or closed-angle glaucoma.
While glaucoma can run in families, other factors can raise your risk. These include age, ethnicity, long-term use of corticosteroid eye drops, and having thinner corneal tissue.
About glaucoma symptoms
In the early stages, glaucoma may not cause any noticeable symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, you may experience a gradual loss of peripheral vision. Other glaucoma symptoms include:
- Blurred or hazy vision
- Rainbows or halos around lights
- Tunnel vision
If you have any of these issues, call Kirk Eye Center in River Forest, Glen Ellyn, Gurnee, or Chicago, IL as soon as possible for a comprehensive eye exam.
Why is Glaucoma Awareness Month important?
Glaucoma Awareness Month is more than just a date on the calendar. Here's why it matters:
- Increase public awareness: Not everyone is aware of how glaucoma can lead to vision loss. By spreading awareness, we can encourage patients and their families to get their eyes checked regularly and catch glaucoma early.
- Early detection leads to better outcomes: As mentioned earlier, glaucoma symptoms may not be noticeable until the disease has progressed. Early detection through eye exams can help prevent irreversible vision loss.
- Support for those living with glaucoma: For those already living with glaucoma, this month serves as a reminder that they are not alone. Support groups and resources are available to help them maintain their quality of life.
