Have you finished your holiday shopping list? December is Safe Toys and Celebrations Month, a reminder for parents to choose age-appropriate and safe toys for children to prevent issues like accidents or vision loss.

We understand how tempting it is to buy the most popular toys of the season, but they're not always the right choice. Below, our team members at Kirk Eye Center have compiled a list of helpful tips to keep in mind when shopping for little ones.

If your child does experience an eye injury, call our office right away to book a pediatric eye exam in River Forest, Glen Ellyn, Gurnee, or Chicago. IL. Remember, healthy eyes are one of the best gifts you can give your family this holiday season.

Choose toys according to age

Age recommendations are stated on packages for a reason. They take into consideration the physical and cognitive abilities of children at different stages of development. Toys that are too complex, for example, can lead to frustration and potential accidents. In addition, make sure to read any warning labels that may indicate potential eye hazards for children.

Choose toys with soft, rounded edges

Avoid toys with sharp or rough edges that can cause cuts or scratches to the eyes. Opt for toys made from soft materials, such as stuffed animals or foam balls. If you're considering a toy with sharp edges, make sure it's age-appropriate and only intended for older children who are more mature and have better control over their movements.

Avoid toys with projectiles

Toys that shoot or launch projectiles, such as toy guns or foam rockets, can cause an eye injury if used improperly. These toys are better suited for older children with proper training and supervision. If your child does receive a toy gun or similar item, make sure to set clear rules and boundaries for safe play. Encourage them to wear protective gear, such as goggles, for healthy eyes that can last a lifetime.

Ensure proper use of screens and devices

Today, many children are exposed to screens and devices at a young age. Monitor the amount of time your child spends in front of a screen and encourage breaks throughout the day. They should also sit at an appropriate distance from the screen (about arm's length) with sufficient lighting in the room. You can also book a pediatric eye exam during Safe Toys and Celebrations Month in River Forest, Glen Ellyn, Gurnee, or Chicago, IL.

Encourage safe play

No matter what toys your child receives, it's important to teach them how to play safely. This includes not throwing or aiming toys at others, avoiding rough play, and being aware of their surroundings while playing. It's also crucial to teach children about proper hygiene when playing with shared toys, such as washing hands before and after use. There's no such thing as being too cautious when it comes to protecting their vision.

Encourage safe toys for children this holiday season

Instead of giving in to the latest toy craze, consider safe toys for children this Safe Toys and Celebrations Month. By choosing age-appropriate toys with soft edges and avoiding projectiles, you can help prevent a serious eye injury from occurring. Don't forget to schedule regular pediatric eye exams at Kirk Eye Center in River Forest, Glen Ellyn, Gurnee, or Chicago, IL to ensure healthy eyes throughout all stages of development. Happy holidays from our team to yours.

Great overall experience with my Lasik procedure for both my eyes. Dr. Kirk & the staff were fantastic throughout the entire process. I'm so pumped that I don't have to wear contacts or glasses ever again!

This is the second time I’ve been to Kirk Eye Center on Harlem. I could not be more pleased. I’ve never had to wait more than a minute or 2 after I arrive. Everyone is friendly and helpful. I’ve seen the technician Rose and Dr Kirk Jr both times and enjoyed being assisted by both. There is even plenty of parking. Glad to have them caring for my diabetic and other needs

This is absolutely no exaggeration. Dr Tyler Kirk saved my right eye. He is the reason I have vision in that eye. I will be a Kirk Eye Center customer for life!

Gurnee Kirk is my "go to home office". Recently had the Femto/Lasik cataract surgery at the surgical center in River Forest. I cannot begin to tell you how professional and yet personal everyone was I came in contact with. From the doctors and technicians, to staff and even the terrific van driver. Everything went so smoothly and I was informed every inch of the way in a very successful procedure. Even the followups being turned over to my long time Optometrist just down the street from me. Five stars is not enough... twenty or more is necessary. Choose Kirk Eye Center, you'll always be grateful you did. Darrell May, Antioch IL.
